Jen’s Take on the NexPTG Pro Carbon

Before I touch a buffer on a car, I measure the paint. Every panel, every time. The reason is simple: there is only so much clear coat on a car, and once you burn through it there is no putting it back. A paint thickness gauge tells me exactly how much I have to work with on each panel, so I know where I can correct hard and where I have to go light.

The Pro Carbon is the top of the NexPTG line, and it is the one I reach for on the cars where there is no room for error. Classics, exotics, and collector cars where a mistake is a very expensive conversation. It reads in seconds, it recognizes steel and aluminum automatically, and it talks to the app on my phone and even my watch, so I can log readings panel by panel and build a real map of the car before I ever start.

It is also the fastest way I know to catch a repaint or hidden bodywork. If you want the full method, read our guide on how to tell if a car has been repainted. And if a car does need correction, see what we do with that information on our paint correction service page.

What Is the NexPTG Pro Carbon?

The NexPTG Pro Carbon is a wireless paint thickness gauge, also called a coating thickness meter or paint depth gauge. It measures the total thickness of all the coating layers on a panel, the primer, base color, and clear coat, right down to the metal, and reports it in microns. That number is what tells a detailer how much clear coat is left to safely polish, and it tells a buyer whether a panel has been repainted or filled.

What sets the Pro Carbon apart from the standard model is range, memory, and smarts. It reads up to 3000 microns, stores up to 8000 measurements, detects zinc up to 1000 microns, runs the Extended version 2 of the Lacquer Coating Analysis System, and adds voice commands, a VIN reader, smartwatch support, and individual vehicle layouts. If you want those extra capabilities and the carbon fiber build, this is the one. If you want the same core accuracy at a lower price, see the NexPTG Professional.

How To Use a Paint Thickness Gauge

  1. Calibrate first. Zero the gauge on the included calibration standards before you start so your readings are accurate.
  2. Set a baseline. Measure the roof first. It is the panel least likely to have been repainted, so it gives you a factory reference to compare against.
  3. Measure every panel. Walk the whole car, hood, doors, fenders, trunk, and take readings on each one. Do not just spot check.
  4. Take several readings per panel. A few spots on each panel shows you whether the reading is consistent. Small variations are normal.
  5. Hold it flat. Keep the probe perpendicular to the surface and avoid edges and body lines, where readings naturally drop.
  6. Read the results. Most factory paint falls between 80 and 180 microns. Readings well above 200 suggest a repaint, and 300 or more often means body filler underneath.

Pro tip from Jen: a gauge pays for itself the first time it stops you from burning an edge or walking into a repainted panel you did not see.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Pro Carbon and the Professional?

The Pro Carbon has a carbon fiber body, a wider 3000 micron range, 8000 reading memory, voice commands, smartwatch support, a VIN reader, and a 36 month warranty. The Professional covers the same core measuring job with a 2500 micron range, 4000 reading memory, and a 24 month warranty at a lower price.

Does it work on aluminum panels?

Yes. The NexPTG automatically recognizes and tests the coating on both steel and aluminum elements, so you do not have to switch modes as you move around the car.

Do I need the app to use it?

The gauge reads on its own, but the free app on your phone, tablet, or smartwatch unlocks data logging, the 100+ car body layouts, and the full measurement map, which is where the Pro Carbon really shines.

Why does a detailer measure paint before polishing?

Because clear coat is finite. Measuring first shows exactly how much is left on each panel, so correction stays safe and you never risk burning through to the color coat.

Can it really tell if a car was repainted?

Yes. Factory paint is consistent, usually 80 to 180 microns. A repainted panel reads higher, often over 200, and filler can push readings past 300. Comparing panels is the fastest way to spot hidden bodywork. See our full guide to spotting a repaint.
