Jen’s Take on the NexPTG Professional

If you asked me which paint thickness gauge most people should actually buy, this is the one. The NexPTG Professional does the job that matters, it tells you how much clear coat is on each panel, accurately and in seconds, without the premium price of the carbon model. It is the gauge I would hand a serious enthusiast or anyone shopping for a used car.

I measure paint before every correction. There is a finite amount of clear coat on a car, and once it is gone, it is gone. This gauge takes ten readings a second, recognizes steel and aluminum automatically, and works even on curved surfaces, so I get a true picture of the whole car before I pick up a pad. It pairs with the app on your phone so you can log readings and build a map of the car panel by panel.

It is also the tool that settles the question every used car buyer asks: has this been repainted? Our full walkthrough is here, how to tell if a car has been repainted. And if your paint needs real work, here is what we do, professional paint correction.

Why You’ll Love the NexPTG Professional

  • Fast, precise readings, ten measurements per second for a true picture of every panel
  • Measures up to 2500 microns with memory for up to 4000 readings
  • Automatic steel and aluminum recognition, no switching modes as you work
  • Works on curved surfaces, so bumpers, fenders, and body lines read accurately
  • Wireless app for phone and tablet with real-time readings and data logging
  • Compact and lightweight, easy to carry for mobile and shop use alike
  • Everything to start, gauge, batteries, calibration standards, and case included

What Is the NexPTG Professional?

The NexPTG Professional is a wireless paint thickness gauge, also called a coating thickness meter or paint depth gauge. It measures the combined thickness of every coating layer on a panel, from primer through base color and clear coat, down to the bare metal, and gives you the total in microns. For a detailer, that number is the green light that says how far you can safely correct. For a buyer, it is the fastest way to catch a repaint.

It is the most advanced of the standard NexPTG models, reading up to 2500 microns, storing up to 4000 measurements, and running the Extended Lacquer Coating Analysis System for reliable results on virtually any car. If you want the widest range, voice commands, a VIN reader, smartwatch support, and a carbon fiber build, step up to the NexPTG Pro Carbon. For most people, the Professional is the sweet spot of accuracy and value.

How To Use a Paint Thickness Gauge

  1. Calibrate first. Zero the gauge on the included calibration standards so your readings are accurate.
  2. Set a baseline. Measure the roof first. It is rarely repainted, so it gives you a factory reference point.
  3. Measure every panel. Work around the whole car, hood, doors, fenders, trunk. Do not just spot check.
  4. Take several readings per panel. Multiple spots confirm whether a panel is consistent. Small variation is normal.
  5. Hold it flat. Keep the probe perpendicular and avoid edges and creases, where readings drop naturally.
  6. Read the results. Factory paint is usually 80 to 180 microns. Well above 200 suggests a repaint, and 300 or more often means filler.

Pro tip from Jen: measure the roof first, then every other panel against it. Consistency is what you are really looking for, not one magic number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Professional accurate enough for real detailing work?

Yes. It uses the same core measuring engine as the carbon model, takes ten readings per second, and reads up to 2500 microns. For paint correction and used car inspection, it is all the accuracy most people need.

What is the difference between this and the Pro Carbon?

The Professional reads up to 2500 microns, stores 4000 readings, and carries a 24 month warranty. The Pro Carbon adds a carbon fiber body, a 3000 micron range, 8000 reading memory, voice commands, a VIN reader, smartwatch support, and a 36 month warranty at a higher price.

Does it work on curved panels?

Yes. The Professional is built to make precise measurements even on curved surfaces, so bumpers, fenders, and strong body lines still read accurately.

Why should I measure paint before polishing?

Clear coat is finite. Measuring first tells you how much is left on each panel so you can correct confidently without risking a burn-through to the color coat.

Can it tell me if a used car was repainted?

Yes. Factory paint usually reads 80 to 180 microns and stays consistent panel to panel. A repaint reads higher, often over 200, and filler can push past 300. Our full guide walks you through it, how to tell if a car has been repainted.
