Jen’s Take on Gtechniq Smart Fabric AB

Smart Fabric is genuinely one of my favorite products to reach for, because it just works, and it works the first time. It is fantastic on any fabric surface, but it really shines on convertible tops and cloth interiors where you need water to bead up and roll off instead of soaking in.

The thing I love most is there is no streaking when you apply it. I have used other fabric protectants that streak and look blotchy, and this one lays down clean every single time. I have customers come back after I treat their convertible top and tell me it looks darker and richer, almost like it is brand new again.

If you have kids who spill things, or a convertible you want to protect from the Texas weather, this is the one. Spill something and do not catch it right away? It beads right up so you can wipe it off later with no stain. One honest heads-up from me: it has a strong smell during application, so work in a well ventilated area, wear gloves, and I even like a mask. And the single most important tip, do not spray it and then rub it in with a towel. The towel soaks up the product and you lose the protection. Spray it on and work it into the fibers by hand with gloves so the fabric gets the full coat.

What Is Gtechniq Smart Fabric AB?

Smart Fabric AB (I1 V3) is a professional-grade fabric protection coating that makes ordinary fabrics waterproof and easy to clean. Gtechniq’s nano particles coat each individual fiber, so water and oil-based liquids get repelled while the material still breathes. That means no soaking, no swelling, and no musty stale air trapped in the fabric.

The all-new formula keeps the same strong hydrophobic performance as the original but adds anti-mold and anti-mildew technology. That matters, because once mold or mildew takes hold in fabric it is tough to remove and can actually start to degrade the material. Lab testing rates its water repellency at the highest standard set by the AATCC, and it holds up even after repeated washing.

What Can You Use It On?

  • Convertible roofs and soft tops (lasts up to 2 years)
  • Cloth and fabric seats and interior upholstery
  • Carpets and floor mats
  • Any fabric surface that needs water and stain protection

How To Apply Smart Fabric (The Right Way)

  1. Clean and fully dry the fabric first. Wash the surface, agitate with a soft brush to lift dirt and hair, and let it dry thoroughly. For best results the fabric should be dry well past touch dry before you coat it.
  2. Shake well, glove up, and ventilate. Wear gloves, work in a well ventilated area out of direct sunlight, and lay towels down to protect nearby paint and glass.
  3. Spray evenly and work it into the fibers. Mist it on from about 6 inches away for thorough, even saturation, then work it into the fibers by hand. Do not rub it in with a towel, the towel will just soak up the product.
  4. Let it cure. Give it 24 hours to reach full effectiveness. Once it dries you cannot add a second coat, the first coat repels new product, so make your single application thorough.

Pro tip from Jen: if any overspray lands on paint or glass, just wipe it off right away with a quick detailer or glass cleaner. I have never had it damage a surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Gtechniq Smart Fabric last?

On a car interior it lasts roughly 6 to 12 months depending on how heavily the surface is used. On a convertible roof it can last up to 2 years.

Will it change how the fabric feels?

No. It coats each fiber individually, so the texture stays the same and the fabric stays breathable. It just adds water and stain repellency.

Is it safe on convertible tops and colored fabric?

Yes. Smart Fabric is color safe and works on all fabrics, including convertible roofs, cloth seats, carpet, and mats.

What is the biggest mistake people make applying it?

Spraying it on and then rubbing it in with a towel. The towel absorbs the product so the fabric never gets a full coat. Spray it on and work it into the fibers by hand with gloves instead.

Does it smell strong?

Yes, the product has a strong odor during application, so use it in a well ventilated area, wear gloves, and consider a mask. The smell dissipates as it cures.
