1986 Ferrari Testarossa Paint Correction & Ceramic Coating in Boerne, TX

Some cars make you stop and just look for a minute before you ever pick up a towel. This 1986 Ferrari Testarossa was one of them. Few shapes from the 1980s are as instantly recognizable as those side strakes and that wide, flat tail, and the owner wanted the paint to finally match the presence of the car.

It came to us through our good friends at Boerne Stage Kustoms, and here is the full story of how we brought this Testarossa back to a deep, glass-clear finish with a multi-stage paint correction and ceramic coating at our studio in Boerne, TX.

Quick Answer: What Did Carsmotology Do to This 1986 Ferrari Testarossa?

Carsmotology performed a full multi-stage paint correction on this 1986 Ferrari Testarossa to remove swirl marks and haze and bring back depth and gloss, then sealed the finish with NXTZEN 365 Pro ceramic coating. We hand washed and clay barred the paint, removed the rear badge for complete coverage, corrected every panel with Rupes polishers, prepped the surface with a CCi panel wipe, and finished with glass, tire, interior, and engine detailing before it went back to Boerne Stage Kustoms.

A Testarossa Worth Doing Right

The Testarossa is a true 1980s icon. Flat-twelve engine, pop-up headlights, and those unmistakable side intake strakes that run down each flank. A car like this deserves paint that looks as alive as the design, and that is exactly the kind of work we love.

When a vehicle carries this much history and value, the correction has to be careful and methodical. There is no rushing a Ferrari. Every step on this one was done with patience and a plan.

Where We Started: Wash, Clay, and Badge Removal

Every proper detail starts with a clean, decontaminated surface. We began with a thorough foam wash to lift and rinse away as much dirt as possible before touching the paint, then moved inside for a full clay bar treatment using a light clay to pull embedded contaminants out of the clearcoat.

From there we carefully taped off every rubber and plastic edge to protect the trim, and we removed the rear Testarossa badge. We like to pull badges when we can so the polisher can reach every inch of paint around them. Those edges are exactly where swirls love to hide, and leaving a border untouched is the difference between a good correction and a flawless one.

Our Multi-Stage Paint Correction Process

With the car prepped and taped, we moved into correction. We started the heavier cutting work with the Rupes Duetto, a Rupes coarse DA wool pad, and a Rupes coarse DA compound to knock down the swirls and haze across the larger panels.

A Testarossa is full of tight, awkward areas, though, and a big polisher cannot reach them all. For the smaller sections around the strakes, mirrors, and curves we switched to the Rupes iBrid Nano with the rotary attachment and the iBrid short neck with the orbital attachment. We also pulled out the LHR75 pneumatic for a few spots that needed a lighter, more controlled touch. Correction is only as good as its worst untouched area, so those detail sections matter just as much as the hood.

To finish, we refined everything with a Rupes fine DA pad and their fine DA polish to bring the clarity and gloss all the way back. That final refining stage is what turns a corrected panel into a mirror.

Prepping the Paint So the Coating Actually Bonds

This is the step a lot of shops skip, and it is one of the most important. After polishing, compounds and polishing oils get buffed down into the pores of the paint. If you coat right over them, the coating never fully bonds and the protection does not last.

So before any coating went on, we cleaned up all the door jambs and then wiped the entire car down with a CCi panel prep. That pulls and dissolves the leftover polishing oils out of the paint so the surface is completely bare and ready. Proper prep is the quiet reason a coating lasts for years instead of months.

Protection: NXTZEN 365 Pro Ceramic Coating

For protection on this Testarossa we applied NXTZEN 365 Pro. This is the coating we include with our details that do not opt for one of our longer-term professional coatings, and it genuinely performs. It adds real gloss, strong water beading, and a slick, easy-to-clean surface that makes future washes faster and safer for the paint.

Once the coating was down and cured, we handled the finishing touches. Clean glass, tire dressing, a wipe down of the interior, and a detail of the engine bay. Then the rear badge went back on and the car was ready for photos and pickup.

The Result

The payoff with a car this color is the reflection. Once the swirls were gone and the coating was on, the red turned deep and wet-looking, the strakes threw clean mirror lines, and the whole car read the way a Testarossa should. This is what a careful, patient correction does on a special car.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is paint correction on a Ferrari Testarossa?+
Paint correction is a multi-stage machine polishing process that removes swirl marks, haze, and light scratches from the clearcoat to restore depth and gloss. On a Testarossa it is done carefully with a mix of larger and smaller polishers so every curve, strake, and tight edge gets corrected without risking the trim.
Why remove the badges before polishing?+
Removing badges lets the polisher reach the paint all the way around them instead of leaving an untouched border where swirls stay hidden. On this Testarossa we removed the rear badge, corrected the full panel, then reinstalled it for a cleaner, more complete finish.
What ceramic coating did you use on this Ferrari?+
We protected this Testarossa with NXTZEN 365 Pro, a ceramic coating that adds gloss, strong water beading, and a slick, easy-to-clean surface. It is the coating we include with details that do not opt for one of our longer-term professional coatings.
Why is paint prep so important before coating?+
After polishing, compound and polish oils get buffed into the pores of the paint. Wiping the car down with a dedicated panel prep removes those oils so the coating can bond directly to bare clearcoat. Skipping this step is a common reason a coating fails early.
Do you only detail exotic cars like Ferraris?+
Not at all. We detail everything from exotics and classics to daily drivers and brand-new vehicles in Boerne, San Antonio, and New Braunfels. The same careful, every-panel process we used on this Testarossa is the process we use on every car.
